Norway in a Nutshell is one of those journeys that somehow exceeds every expectation. Starting in Bergen, the route combines scenic railways, dramatic fjords, mountain villages, and unforgettable views into an itinerary that’s as much about the journey as the destinations. Every leg of the trip feels like another postcard come to life, making it easy to see why this is one of Norway’s most popular experiences– in both summer and winter!

Our first stop was an overnight stay in Flåm after riding the world-famous Flåm Railway, where waterfalls, towering cliffs, and winding valleys steal the show from your train window. Spending the night instead of rushing through gave us time to slow down and enjoy the village. One of the highlights was unwinding in a floating sauna on the fjord before taking a refreshing plunge into the icy water—a uniquely Norwegian experience that was equal parts invigorating and relaxing. That evening, we wrapped up the day at Ægir Gastropub, where Viking-inspired décor, hearty local cuisine, and a tasting flight of craft beers and spirits (double the fun!) made for the perfect end to an unforgettable day.

Continuing the journey, the scenery never let up as we cruised through the breathtaking Nærøyfjord and made our way toward Voss. Rather than simply changing trains, we built in time to explore the town and enjoy lunch at the historic Fleischer’s Hotel, a charming property that has welcomed travelers for generations. Just across the street, the Voss Gondol whisked us high above the valley, rewarding us with panoramic views of lakes, mountains, and the surrounding countryside that made the short detour well worth it.

By the time we returned to Bergen, Norway in a Nutshell felt like much more than a transportation route—it was the perfect introduction to western Norway. From dramatic fjords and iconic train rides to floating saunas, craft beer, and mountaintop views, every stop offered something memorable. If you’re looking for an itinerary that balances adventure, relaxation, and some of the country’s most spectacular scenery, this one is hard to beat.
Whether you have one day or several, Norway in a Nutshell is more than just a transportation route—it’s one of the best introductions to Norway’s dramatic landscapes. A day trip showcases the country’s iconic scenery, while a multi-day itinerary transforms the experience into a relaxed adventure filled with unique activities, local food, and unforgettable moments along the way.
