If you are visiting Brussels and looking for something fun to do– why not try a Waffle Making Workshop!?! It is a great way to discover Brussels and get a meal in while you are at it– a win-win. The location of the workshop was just over a half mile from the Grand Place, the center plaza in Brussels, so we took the opportunity to explore a bit on the way. We no more than 10 minutes early, as instructed and was greeted by two friendly staff members– one for a chocolate making workshop, taking place upstairs and one leading our group to make waffles.
We picked a station at one of the tables and after careful instructions on measurements and weights, we were given a recipe to follow. There were actually 3 different recipes offered, depending on the size of the group and whether anyone was gluten-free (a designated waffle iron was used at the end so no cross contamination). Since there was just two of us, we were given a recipe to make 4 large waffles. After cracking our eggs, weighing our flour, and measuring our vanilla sugar (we do not have this in the US, so we learned how to make it at home-click for recipe) we were ready for the waffle iron!

We waited our turn and then made our way to spoon the batter onto the hot iron. Once the handle was closed, we had a short 2-minute wait until the first one was ready. During the introduction, we heard the difference between the Liege, or street waffle and the traditional Belgium waffles. Street waffles are yeasted and contains a higher amount of sugar, so traditionally they are served plain. Belgium waffles, the ones we made in the workshop are the ones that typically have toppings… and toppings were provided in abundance! Chocolate, hazelnuts, jelly, banana, whipped cream, sprinkles you name it. As I like mine on the less sweet side, I went with fresh bananas and a strawberry sauce with a bit of whipped cream. While my friend went with chocolate sauce, bananas, chocolate chips, and whipped cream– you can’t go wrong either way!
My 2nd waffle turned out a bit less pretty, as I tried a different combination on each of the two sides. There were just too many possible combinations! Caramel sauce, apricot jam, cookie butter, nutella, strawberry jelly, peanut butter… the list goes on. The workshop was a not only a great way to start the morning, but it was a great way to kick off the first day of our trip! I highly recommend doing this activity if you are visiting Brussels.
